Downtown New York with ManhattanWalks

Downtown, formerly “New Amsterdam,” was the first area of New York City settled by the Dutch in 1624. Today it's the center of world finance, but just a short walk away you'll find cobblestone streets, charming 19th century buildings, and historic sites including Federal Hall, where George Washington was inaugurated as America's first president.

In all its grandeur, Wall Street is the site of the world's commercial capital, home of the New York and American Stock Exchange, and other worldly symbols of power.

Saint Paul's Chapel

Another standout, St. Paul's Chapel and churchyard, is the City's oldest church building and was used for the service following George Washington's presidential inauguration. This sacred site was spared three times, during the great fires of 1776 and 1835, and it also survived untouched on September 11, 2001.

Some of the most recognizable downtown locations include Trinity Church, City Hall, Foley Square, the site of the World Trade Center, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Wall Street Bull.

After your downtown walking tour, you can choose from an array of cultural institutions or jump on the Staten Island Ferry for dramatic views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
